Is it hard to learn Armenian?

Learning any new language takes commitment, but learning Armenian is relatively easy compared to other language courses. New Armenian speakers will often start by learning the basics – starting with the Armenian alphabet and pronunciation, then building basic vocabulary, phrases, and eventually starting to construct sentences of their own and practice speaking with native speakers.

Learning to speak Armenian fluently is easier than other languages because Armenian pronunciation is the same, no matter the context. For example, the letter ‘a’ or ‘ա’ is always pronounced ‘ah’ – every time it’s spoken, in all words and phrases. This means that once you learn the Armenian alphabet once, learners can be confident that they can use pronounce all new words correctly.

Another thing you’ll discover when learning Armenian is that the spoken language is charming, and sometimes very funny. English speakers in particular will find the translation for toes to be quite funny (literally ‘foot fingers’ in Armenian), and other examples include ‘host’, which carries the literal translation of ‘guest possessor’, and zebra, with its direct translation: ‘tiger horse’!

How long does it take to learn the Armenian language?

If you start learning today, in 6 weeks you’ll know how to read and write, and in 7 weeks you’ll be able to put together sentences. And while it might take some time to speak fluently, an Armenian language course, like the ones offered at Tun Online Armenian School, can make learning fun, as you expand your vocabulary with new words and master the spoken word, so that eventually you’ll be speaking with Armenians like a native speaker.

If you choose to learn on your own, without a language course, this can take much longer. DIY language learners need to develop word lists, uncover grammar rules, understand sentence structure, conquer tense: past, present and future, design lesson plans, find consistent information about the languages they’re learning, and somehow push through when there is no one to ask for help, or other students to practice with! All this can be difficult when trying to learn a foreign language or languages.
