Here’s what we’d work on next

“I understand everything, I just can’t really speak it” is one of the most common things Armenian heritage speakers say about their own Armenian. This quiz tests your actual Armenian level — vocabulary, everyday phrases and practical language skills — to see where you really stand.

“I understand Armenian, but I can’t speak it”

This is an extremely common stage for diaspora Armenians: years of hearing the language at home built strong listening comprehension, but without regular opportunities to actually speak it, the ability to produce sentences confidently never quite caught up. It’s not a lack of talent — it’s simply a language skill that was never actively practised.

What does knowing Armenian actually involve?

“Knowing” a language really breaks into four separate skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Many heritage speakers are strong in listening, weaker in speaking, and start from close to zero in reading and writing — which is exactly why a quiz like this can feel harder than expected even for someone who grew up around the language.

Eastern Armenian or Western Armenian?

Your result may also depend on which Armenian you grew up around. Eastern Armenian (spoken in Armenia and parts of the diaspora) and Western Armenian (spoken by diaspora communities descended from Western Armenia) share the same roots but differ in pronunciation, some vocabulary and grammar — so “good Armenian” looks a little different depending on which one you mean.

Improving your Armenian level

The good news is that the gap between understanding and speaking is usually one of the fastest things to close, precisely because the listening comprehension and vocabulary are often already there — what’s missing is structured speaking practice.
