Learning a language often starts with the words closest to daily life — and for a lot of people, that’s food. This quiz tests your Armenian food vocabulary: can you name bread, water, fruit, cheese, coffee and more in Armenian, in both Eastern and Western pronunciation?

Learn Armenian vocabulary through food

Food vocabulary tends to stick because it’s used constantly and it’s attached to real memories — a grandmother asking if you want more, a market stall, a recipe passed down by ear rather than by written instructions. That makes it one of the easiest and most rewarding places to start building Armenian vocabulary.

Armenian food words you may already know

Many diaspora Armenians already know a surprising number of food words without ever formally studying the language — “hats” (bread), “jur” (water), “panir” (cheese), “surch” (coffee) — simply from hearing them at home. This quiz is partly a way of noticing just how much vocabulary you already have.

Eastern and Western Armenian pronunciation

One quirk of Armenian is that the same word can sound noticeably different depending on whether you learned Eastern or Western Armenian, partly due to a consonant shift between the two dialects. Knowing both versions helps you recognise words no matter which side of the language your family (or a menu) comes from.

Why learn the Armenian alphabet?

Once you know the spoken words, learning the Armenian alphabet — designed specifically for this language in 405 AD — lets you actually read menus, labels and recipes rather than relying on transliteration, which is where vocabulary really starts to stick long-term.

From Armenian food words to sentences

Food vocabulary is also a natural bridge into full sentences: “I want bread,” “this is delicious,” “can I have more water” are all sentences built almost entirely from words you likely already picked up from this quiz.

Learning Armenian through familiar topics

Language sticks best when it’s attached to something you already care about, and for most Armenians, food is one of the strongest of those anchors — which is exactly why it’s such a good place to start (or restart) learning.

Ready to learn more than the menu?

If you can already name half the dishes on this quiz, you’re closer to conversational Armenian than you might think.
